indian race horse debut

debut run of the raCE HORSE ???

It's a multicrore industry in which fortunes are made or lost at the toss of the genetic dice. Owning a racehorse appeals to vanity and there is glamour surrounding the sport, but it all boils down to a question of breeding. Well-known horse-racing commentator Cyrus Madan offers some expert advice for those with an eye for the fillies.Les Carleon, one of Australia's leading journalists, has defined horse racing with typical Aussie common sense: ``If you insist that two and two must always make four, if you cannot dream a little, forget about the turf and horse racing. Put on a white coat with a beeper in the pocket and go find a laboratory somewhere. To enjoy the turf and horses you have to accept that two plus two is often five or nine or, more commonly, nought.'' Horse racing is all about drama rather than probabilities. It's about risks--physical, financial and moral. It's about man with all his vanity, his commonplace greed and his occasional nobility and an animal called the thoroughbred which can be exquisitely beautiful but is born with a congenital tendency to self-destruct. The thoroughbred is one of the most regal and magnificent creatures in the world with an exclusivity that makes him truly blue-blooded and a breed apart. To be labelled a thoroughbred, a horse has to trace back his ancestry to one of three founding sires--The Byerly Turk, The Darley Arabian and The Godolphin Barb. These are the three stallions from which every thoroughbred in the world descends. And if a horse's bloodlines do not go back to that trio, he is simply not a thoroughbred. The sport itself, however, is nowhere near as cut and dried and that age-old axiom which said that horses were born to make fools out of men, still applies. It is the only sport in the world where lords and ladies, sheikhs and queens, celebrities and tycoons rub shoulders with the common man in an endeavour to prove who is truly the shrewdest judge of horseflesh and who truly understands the horse. So, who are the players in this enigmatic game? What is the fascination and mystique attached to the sport, and how does one go about buying a racehorse--or even part of one? For that, there is one crucial requirement: hope. Hope that when the sun dawns, the next day he will have bred or owned or bought or trained or ridden or backed a potential champion. But before that, the basics, or the beginning. The starting point in the horse-racing game is the place where the thoroughbred is born and nurtured--the stud farm. Horse breeding is in itself a science and it's not a simple case of hit and miss. It's an intricate and difficult process. In fact, there is probably no other sport in the world where the approach to produce an athlete begins even before the athlete is actually conceived which makes it one of the most advanced of its kind. In India, horse racing is gradually coming of age and the day when it can be compared to international levels is no longer a mere pipe dream. An Indian champion like Astonish which was owned by J.P. Goenka, Deepak Khaitan and Ross Deas, became the first Indian thoroughbred to ever win a race outside India. He stormed home at the Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong on his debut, taking on horses of the highest class based there to show that an Indian bred one could hold its own. A little later the Vijay Mallya-owned Adler won a race in the USA to bring even further laurels. Both the horses were well past their prime when they travelled abroad and the stringent, antiquated and uncompromising quarantine laws that are there from the days of Queen Victoria made their task even more difficult. Astonish, for instance, first had to travel all the way to the West Coast of the USA, spend six months there in quarantine before being allowed to ``step hoof'' into Hong Kong! Thanks to this sort of red tapism and constraints, the Indian racehorse finds it virtually impossible to compete in the major invitational races of the world despite being nominated for them. Thus, a horse like Elusive Pimpernel, arguably the greatest champion the Indian Turf has seen in recent times, had a chance to participate in the richest race ever run in the world, namely the Dubai World Cup. However, thanks to the quarantine laws, he could not leave Indian shores. A similar scenario repeated itself when, despite being eligible to participate in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, an invitational event in Hong Kong, Elusive Pimpernel was once again denied an entry. He had to stay on in India, where the only opposition was records in stake money. In his last few races it became a straight case of Elusive Pimpernel first--the rest nowhere. For such a champion to have been denied a chance to compete at an international level was nothing short of criminal.Despite such setbacks, the Indian thoroughbred industry is flourishing. In 1969, Indian stud farms produced 391 foals which would eventually come up for sale two years later at the annual auction sales. In 1996, a total of 1,807 foals were registered. Moreover, studs are importing a host of stallions and mares each year and, this has, over a period of time, bettered the quality of stock that comes up for sale. Descendants of some of the most illustrious equine families in the world of breeding are now represented here in India. Thus, you find sons of the legendary Northern Dancer, one of the greatest progenitors in the world, standing at farms in India. So, too, are sons of Saddler's Wells, Mr Prospector, Danzig, Sir Ivor, Blushing Groom and Busted, to mention a few. Their offspring sell at well beyond the million-dollar mark in the USA.
Owning A RacehorseThe breeding industry is faced with one serious problem--there are not enough buyers for the total number of horses produced. If you want to own a racehorse you have to be registered and accepted as an owner by any of the five turf authorities. The first step is to decide on your budget. Horses are available for anything between Rs 25,000 and 25 lakh, quite like paintings. The only difference is that while paintings are a somewhat sound investment, there is no guarantee whatsoever that the thoroughbred for which you have coughed up a million will turn out to be a champion. Few horses ever recover their cost price and, remember, there is a monthly expense of at least Rs 7,000 by way of a basic training fee which keeps adding up on your meter once the horse has been purchased. So, if it's not a viable proposition, why do people own horses? Well, that's a difficult one to answer, but let us face it, you can't own a racehorse unless you have the bucks. At least you can't own one yourself. What you can do is form a partnership, or a syndicate, or a private limited company or a racing club which are all recognised forms of ownership worldwide. Thus, instead of being an individual owner you can be part of any of the above and that would not only cut down on your investment and your expenses but it could also allow you to own more than just a few reasonably priced horses with whom you have some chance of making a go of it (see box). Remember, depending on how you handle them, a racehorse can race from the age of two years until the age of seven or eight. This is on an average. There have been quite a few who have continued to race at the highest level until well past the age of eight but they are at their prime between the time they are four and six.
The Best of the BreedersStud farms have mushroomed all over the country but only a handful hold centrestage. The current racing year, for instance, appears to belong to Major Pradeep Mehra's Usha Stud and Mehra Farms. The latest chapter in their success story revolves around the farm's resident stallion, Razeen, a recent import. Razeen is a son of the great Northern Dancer and in his first crop of horses he has already produced a host of champions including the winner and runner-up of the McDowell Indian Derby and the Kingfisher Indian Oaks, two of the most important classics run in India. The Usha Stud and the Mehra Stud which are located next to each other are not far from Delhi, in Haryana. Here, Major Pradeep Mehra and his daughter Ameeta have produced remarkable results from a small beginning and the Usha and Mehra studs are today considered to be one of the best in the land. They enjoyed their most heady moments in the late '70s and early '80s and now those glorious days of the past seem to have returned with Razeen's horses in full cry. In fact, it's amusing to note that in the McDowell Indian Derby this year, Pradeep was in that enviable position where he could not lose since he had a share in both the horses that were fighting it out at the finish, namely Indictment owned by Khushroo Dhunjibhoy and Arabian Rose owned by Vijay Mallya. When Indictment got the verdict by a narrow margin, Mehra was asked: ``Whom were you rooting for in the finish?'' Mehra smiled and replied: ``Neither. I was yelling for the horse who sired both of them--Razeen. What mattered most was that one of his offspring win the Derby from his very first crop.'' In the cantonment town of Pune is the Poonawalla Group of Farms, the home of a conglomerate of champions. Astonish and Adler, for example, were both bred at this very farm which is managed by the Poonawalla brothers, Cyrus and Zavaray, and together they have taken the Poonawalla Group of Farms to the very pinnacle of success in recent years. Horses bred by them won the McDowell Indian Derby five years in a row from 1988 to 1992 and they were denied a record sixth successive victory by a whisker when Astronomic just edged out Summer Dust in a pulsating finish. The Poonawalla Group of Farms is home to Malvado, a champion sire in his own right here in India and to the late Riyahi, a son of Red God. Riyahi, like Malvado, has been a champion sire in India. So is Placerville, the winner of The Prince Of Wales Stakes and himself a son of the top international stallion Prospector. Al Nassr Alwasheik, the most recent import, is also bred in the blue and has quite a record and finally there is Exhilaration--son of Malvado--a champion racehorse who was unbeaten in all his nine starts. Together, they represent awesome potential and with the track record that the farm has built up, it appears that they will continue to be at the top.The former Punjab chief minister H.S. Brar and his family are yet another set of high-profile individuals who have established a successful operation when it comes to breeding horses. Their Dashmesh Stud in the Muktsar district of Punjab has had its fair share of champions and Elusive Pimpernel, arguably the greatest racehorse seen in recent times, was born and raised there. Did they know that he was destined to become a legend? Well, that is like asking Pete Sampras' parents whether they knew their son would be the world champion before he began playing tennis. Elusive Pimpernel had the breeding and as he grew he acquired the build but after him none of his brothers and sisters came even remotely close in comparison.
Where to BuyAll thoroughbreds in the northern hemisphere share a common birthday--the 1st of January. Hence, on New Year's Day they all turn one year older irrespective of when they were actually born. As a result, most of them are foaled prior to March. They are up for sale just after they have turned two, at which juncture they have not even stepped onto the racetrack. Of course, a lot of them are sold from the stud farms even before they have completed 18 months, but the majority come to Mumbai where the Royal Western India Turf Club conducts the major auction sale of the year. You can buy either prior to the sale by what is called a private sale or you can buy in the auction ring itself and after that all you can do is hope that your newest equine acquisition turns out to be a champion or at least wins you a couple of races when he starts racing approximately nine months later. After the horse has been purchased you have to entrust him to a trainer who is licensed by the turf clubs to look after your horse and train him to race. Your selection of the trainer is almost as vital as your selection of the horse, but if you are a relative newcomer to the game then it would be better to opt for one of the two options. Approach an acquaintance who is already involved in the game to a large extent and ask him for his advice and to introduce you to a few trainers or else go to the turf club and seek the advice of one of their racing executives. Ask them to provide you with their performance statistics and then you can decide.
Earning Against the Odds What would the average racehorse earn in a year for his connections? Well, if you have that Midas touch and owned a horse like Elusive Pimpernel, he would have earned you over Rs 1 crore in a span of a little over two years. But he was no average racehorse. His full sister and his brothers put together did not earn what Elusive Pimpernel won in his first four months of racing, and they must have been purchased for mind-boggling prices since they were so closely related. On an average, however, horses could win a race a season or two a year. Of course, stake money has risen dramatically, thanks to corporate involvement in the sport by way of sponsorship. Back in 1977, Squanderer won the Invitation Cup in Bangalore and earned about Rs 1,40,000 for his efforts. In March this year, when the ITC-sponsored Classic Indian Turf Invitation Cup is run at the same venue, the winner would have earned over Rs 24 lakh for his pains. An increase of over 1,614 per cent in 20 years. Similarly, when Squanderer won the Indian Derby that year in Mumbai, he earned Rs 1,50,000. In 1977, Indictment won the McDowell-sponsored McDowell Indian Derby and earned his connections Rs 20.5 lakh.Major stud farms have introduced races of their own where the guaranteed stakes are well over the million rupee mark not to mention a host of other corporate concerns like Eveready Industries, the UB Group, Castrol India Ltd--all of whom have joined the corporate sponsorship bandwagon having found horse racing the ideal platform and medium to be associated with. A race like the Poonawalla Breeders Million sponsored by the Poonawalla Group of Farms has become the richest race on the Indian racing calendar and it attracts the crowds as well with marketing gimmicks such as contests where the first prize is a Maruti 800 car. With these sort of attractions the chance that you might recover something of the cost price of your horse is always there, but you have to remember that in every race there are only five or six horses which bring in the money or earn stakes. The other 20 have given it their all but returned penniless. That's the way the cookie crumbles, but of late even the crumbs of that cookie are incentive

Azim Premji Profile

Born: July 24, 1945Achievements: Chairman of Wipro Technologies; Richest Indian for the past several years; Honored with Padma Bhushan in 2005. Azim Premji is Chairman of Wipro Technologies, one of the largest software companies in India. He is an icon among Indian businessmen and his success story is a source of inspiration to a number of budding entrepreneurs.Born on July 24, 1945, Azim Hashim Premji was studying Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA when due to the sudden demise of his father, he was called upon to handle the family business. Azim Premji took over the reins of family business in 1966 at the age of 21. At the first annual general meeting of the company attended by Azeem Premji, a shareholder doubted Premji's ability to handle business at such a young age and publicly advised him to sell his shareholding and give it to a more mature management. This spurred Azim Premji and made him all the more determined to make Wipro a success story. And the rest is history. When Azim Premji occupied the hot seat, Wipro dealt in hydrogenated cooking fats and later diversified to bakery fats, ethnic ingredient based toiletries, hair care soaps, baby toiletries, lighting products and hydraulic cylinders. Thereafter Premji made a focused shift from soaps to software. Under Azim Premji's leadership Wipro has metamorphosed from a Rs.70 million company in hydrogenated cooking fats to a pioneer in providing integrated business, technology and process solutions on a global delivery platform. Today, Wipro Technologies is the largest independent R&D service provider in the world. Azim Premji has several achievements to his credit. In 2000, Asiaweek magazine, voted Premji among the 20 most powerful men in the world. Azim Premji was among the 50 richest people in the world from 2001 to 2003 listed by Forbes. In April 2004, Times Magazine, rated him among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. He is also the richest Indian for the past several years. In 2005,Government of India honored Azim Premji with Padma Bhushan.

for mumbai season....news

Irish Jockey Daniel Grant is all set to make an impression on the Mahalaxmi Turf on Thursday. He has been engaged to ride for owner Harish Mehta for the current Season. Grant has a rich experience behind him having ridden well over 2,000 races in his career so far. He has ridden close to 120 winners and it will be interesting to see how he shapes up at the Mumbai Race Course.

Two other overseas jockeys have been granted an "A" license to ride in India. Twenty-year-old Christopher Denise Hayes will be riding in the colours of Dr. Vijay Mallya representing United Racing and Bloodstock Breeders Ltd. Hayes is a young jockey and his score of 116 winners till date shows that he has it in him what it takes to be in the forefront on the race track. He has so far ridden about 1,400 races. Another foreign rider, Silvestre De Sousa will also make his appearance before long. He has arrived from Brazil.

A compact card of 7 races is slated for the day and it is expected to be competitive and absorbing. Here are the selections for Thursday

kolkata winter races

About 320 horses are in station to participate during the meet spanning 30 race days spread over five-and-half months—commencing on Sunday, November 4 and concluding on Friday, April 11.
Other than Daniel David, trainer Vijay Singh is expected to be in the forefront with a fairly large string comprising 49 older horses and 19 two-year-olds.
Two other trainers who are sure to have a major impact this season are Javed Khan and Robin Corner. Both are men with excellent track records and are certain to give the pair of top-notchers mentioned earlier, a run for their money. Thus far, 13 'A' and 2 'B' licenses have been granted to the trainers stationed at this centre.
As many as 24 'A' and 20 'B' licensed riders, spearheaded by Christopher Alford and Imran Chisty, will be donning silks for various owners. The power-packed stables of Deepak Khaitan and MAM. Ramaswamy are certain to dominate the proceedings once again as they have been doing during the past several years. It is also reliably learnt that the colours of big names like Dhunjibhoy and Vijay Mallya will be seen in action on all major race days.
An auction has been planned for Tuesday, November 20. Three two-year-olds and seven older horses brought to this centre by the Club will come under the hammer. Aspiring owners can cash in on this early auction sale.
Come Sunday, make it a point to have your finger in the pie when the season kick-starts with a bang!

bangalore winter season dates ( horse racing) 2007-2008

BANGALORE: About 800 horses and 80 jockeys will feature in the Bangalore winter meetings which kick off here on Saturday, November 5. The season concludes on March 31, 2006. The highlight of the winter meetings will be the Invitation Cup weekend to be held on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5.
Racing will be held mainly on Fridays and Saturdays, and concurrently winter races will be held at Mysore for a fortnight, mainly on Wednesdays. Compared to an overall stakes of 7.97 crores paid out during the last winter meeting, a total stakes of Rs.11 crores, including the Invitation Cup, which is estimated at Rs.1.50 crores, would be paid during this season.
A maximum of eight races would be conducted on all race days and nine during classics and the concluding day of the season.
The BTC, also announced that probable international rating will be published for horses placing first, second and third in all graded and other important races and a consolidated list of top 20 horses will be published along with probable international rating at the conclusion of every racing season.
This is expected to serve as a useful guide to owners and trainers aspiring to race their wards abroad. Briefing the media, the Chairman of the BTC, Mr. Marilingaiah, said that due to abundant rain, the track is in an excellent condition. About 13 to 15 bookmakers, are expected to operate in the first and second enclosures respectively.
The following are the race dates: Nov: 5, 12, 13, 19, 25 and 26 (Bangalore 1000 Guineas); Dec: 3 (Bangalore Turf Club Trophy), 9, 10 (Harvins Bangalore 2000 Guineas), 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.
Jan. 2006: 6 (Bangalore Oaks), 13 (Chief Minister's Trophy), 20, 21, 26 (Poonawalla Bangalore Derby) and 27. Feb: 3, 11, 17, 18 (Bangalore Winter Million), 24 and 25 (Governor's Trophy). March: 4 (Sprinters and Stayers Cup), 5 (Indian Turf Invitation Cup), 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 30 and 31 (Bangalore Juvenile Million).

mumbai winter horse season dates

Mumbai season from Nov. 18
MUMBAI, NOV. 12. The Mumbai winter racing season will get underway here from November 18 and conclude on May 1, 2005 according to the prospectus issued here by Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).
Until last year, a lengthy programme of 55 race days used to be framed by the Turf Club but it never achieved the desired goals.
The main reason of reducing more number of race days from 55 to 46 race meetings by RWITC is in a bid to reverse the dwindling public attendance at the races and also boost up the fragile economy of the turf club.
The total stakesmoney for the season is Rs. 9,13,00,000 including the worth of trophies as against last year's Rs. 8,26,04,500 including the value of trophies.
Previously, sponsors were keen to sponsor the Indian Classic events in Western India but this year's prospectus paints a grim picture as only one, the Indian Derby (Feb. 6) has been sponsored by McDowell & Co. Ltd. It is expected that power czars of RWITC will do their best to rope in some new sponsors for the other classic events before it is too long.
Mr. B.N. Nanjappa, the estate manager of RWITC told The Hindu that " this year we have brought the Gujarat graded river sand for the all weather track. The inside 20 feet of the all weather track at Mumbai race course has been relayed with the Gujarat river sand for the entire circumference. This track is exclusively being reserved for the fast work of the horses. Not more than two horses abreast will be permitted to go fast for the time being''.
He also disclosed that " the remaining 60 feet of all weather track will be very soon partitioned with false rails for slow work i.e. trotting and slow canter.''
" I don't think that with the relaying of this Gujarat sand, horses will be able to record the fast timings (like the Pune sand track) like earlier years'' he added.
He also said that " horses which worked for 10 to 15 minutes in the bund schools earlier may not take such a long time due to relaying of Gujarat sand in the bund schools''.
" If the newly laid sand track proves better during the coming Mumbai season, we may use the same sand for the bund schools and the outer sand track at Pune so that horses could go fast during the wet spell'' he said.
" Once a week, all the trainers who desire to give mock race to their wards will be permitted to gallop on the outer strip of the race track. A starting gate will be kept ready for this purpose. The mock races will start from 2000m or whichever trip the trainers may desire'' he disclosed.
Suraj Narredu will ride for trainer Aarti Doctor's horses while Kamlesh will don the silk for trainer C.D. Katrak. M. Narredu will guide the destiny of Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy's horses. C. Rajendra as usual will be piloting Mr. Shapoorji's horses. B. Prakash will ride Dr. M.A.M. Ramasamy's horses.

Hyderabad winter horse race season from Nov. 4

Hyderabad season from Nov. 4
HYDERABAD: A total of Rs.7,61,48,500 crore will be at stake during the 2007-08 winter racing season, starting on November 4, marking a 26.20 per cent increase over last winter’s offering.
The stakes, race-wise, will be the highest in the country.
The main attraction of the ensuing season will be the Invitation Cup week-end to be held on March 1 and 2.
The Hyderabad Race Club will for the first time host the Hyderabad Juvenile Multi Million stakes for three-year-olds only on March 2 adding more attraction to the Invitation day.
In addition, the A.P. Race Horse Owners Association Million (for three-year-olds only) will be another event punters will look forward to on January 27, the Vijay Textiles Golconda Derby Stakes day.
The other racing days are:
November 5, 11, 12, 18 (Golconda 1000 Guineas), 19, 25 and 26.

Bourbon King’s style of win

iBourbon King’s style of win in the Rajytotsava Cup on the opening day of Bangalore Winter races on Saturday suggested that no body in the country would beat this son of Diffident up to a mile. Bourbon King is the right kind of horse which should be sent to Dubai to race in the Dubai Racing Carnival. In the kind of form that he is in, Bourbon King would easily beat even the mighty Southern Empire.
Bourbon King was expected to have it tough against seasoned horses like Hesperus and Green Bax as he was giving weight to these horses. If Bourbon King had run in a handicap race, both these horses would have been conceding weight to him. Bourbon King scored a bloodless victory and he won by more than six lengths. Jockey Prakash was not even required to use the whip to get him going. According to me, Bourbon King is a good thing for the Indian 2000 Guineas and I firmly believe that no other horse in the country can come anywhere near him. Pesi Shroff and the rest who would have been nursing hope of winning the Indian 2000 Guineas can quickly bury their dream.

narendra lagad

Narendra Lagad, the burly Western India race horse trainer was crowned the Champion Trainer of the recently concluded Pune Meeting 2007. This was a fitting “Silver Jubilee” gift for the person who is in the 25th year of his racing career. IndiaRace caught him basking in his hour of glory and persuaded this publicity shy trainer to talk about his recent success and some unconventional style of operations attributed to him. Naren, as he is informally referred to, opened into a gallop after a few reserved trots. Excerpts:
Indiarace: Hearty congratulations on your winning the Championship. What was your first reaction?Narendra Lagad: Oh! It’s an immensely satisfying outcome, worth all the toil and sweat. The Pune Meeting 2007 will be a landmark in my career.
IR: What do you attribute this success to?NL: It’s the result of a good team work. I share my success with everyone associated. I acknowledge the co-operation of my owners, my jockeys, my family and last but not the least, my stable work-force. Everyone has contributed wholeheartedly for this to happen.
IR: Is there a sense of pride in your achievement?NL: Of course. Any little success is something to be proud about. This one is a major reward! Competing against top-class trainers that Western India boasts of, I cherish this Championship. This is every trainer’s dream – to be crowned Champion! The competition was stiff, that makes the victory sweet and the margin even sweeter. It was comprehensive. Not only did I have the maximum winners, I also had the most number of seconds and thirds! So this makes it rare and special for me.
IR: How has your career panned out?NL: This is my 25th year in training. I recollect fondly when Grand Gesture won me my first race. He was 13 years old when he won that race - a post-retirement age for most race horses. From there on, it has been a long learning experience with each passing year.
IR: It is pretty intriguing to note that you switch jockeys as one changes shirts, while most would prefer a steady jockey-horse combination.NL: It might seem unconventional, but it has its advantages. Having said that, I always ask the owner to pick the jockey he wants. With many good jockeys around they have a choice. It becomes competitive for the riders too and they can’t afford to be complacent. No mount is taken for granted and we opt to go for the Jockey in good form. IR: So you don’t commit a ride to your jockey in advance?NL: I am only committed to my owners and my horses! I strive to see that my owners’ investments in horses end up as money put to good use. Stake money should always keep adding into their accounts. The recently concluded Pune season was extremely satisfying. If you take a look at the stats, out of about 220 runners for my stables almost 50 per cent have figured on the board. My owners are earning stake money on wins and places. This is the economic perspective. I am an owner’s trainer; I train for owners who have a small string of horses as well. Some are having just one or two horses. My ideology is, eventually, my owner has to have some return on his/her investment.
IR: If I check on stats, I also come across one that divulges that most favourites from your yard lose. Why is it so?NL: That’s a myth. I try to win all the time irrespective of the betting ring status. If you match my number of runners to winners, my strike ratio is high enough. Let me explain. On a large scale, there are a number of times when the horses are false favourites. This, I can’t control. People perceive them as favourites. Yes, some fancied horses do take a beating, some are close seconds. This is part of this unpredictable sport. Nevertheless, you are inaccurate if you say my favourites always lose. In fact, I have a better favourite winning ratio than some of the more affluent trainers in Western India. I am not denying that I need to improve on that score, but you must understand that I have no say on the quotes in the ring. Many times the odds don’t justify the horse. To sum it up, I would put it this way – the horses that I fancy from my stables often do well. My owners would vouch for that!
IR: Does that mean if one of your horses is a ‘false favourite’ you are not concerned?NL: Of course I am concerned! Any favourite carries a lot of public money. There is pressure on me and my jockey as well. Fortunately, with latest technology at hand there are various camera angles to view the entire race. Anyone can judge whether the horse has been given an appropriate run. After all there is accountability!
IR: Don't you think your race strategy is too predictable - “Take jump, hit front”?NL: (Laughs) I like to ensure that my horses dictate the pace of the race. Also, when you are leading the pack you are at an advantage at the crucial home turn. No encountering traffic problems, no checks and a clear rails run is up for grabs. It helps if the Jockey gets to control the pace all through. I also believe in going for a big lead particularly in long distance races. It (the lead) proves handy, if not decisive, if others have to cover a lot of ground nearing the turn. It may even induce them to alter their plans and start riding out earlier than they would have liked to. It has worked for me most of the times. However, this is not a set mind-set. IR: Your 'Big Race” record is not particularly encouraging. Are you not concerned about this? NL: You are partially correct. I have won seven Million Races. My filly Timeless Beauty stretched the Triple Crown winning colt Indictment by a short head in the Indian 2000 Guineas. I have run second and third in the Indian Oaks and my Inflammable ran third to Star Supreme in the Indian Derby. You see, I only race in Mumbai and Pune. That restricts my chances to only a few cracks at the Classics. With such limited options you can't say I have done too badly.
IR: What is you specialty?NL: I am skilled in repairing broken down horses. That’s my trait. I have successfully set right quite a few horsesand have helped in correcting horses from other stables as well.I always offer my help to anyone who has a horse with a setback. I remember Sherwood…he was totally broken down and in a bad shape. It took me a little over two months to get him right. The brave horse subsequently thrilled me by winning Three races in a row!
IR: What is your advice for aspiring trainers? Do you see any budding talents who could make it big? NL: Training is a skilled job. You got to know your horses extremely well. They are top priority. It is tough for new comers. I would advice the aspiring lads to get the basics right. A course abroad is necessary. One has to learn the ropes and get enough exposure. Always think horses! Faisal Abbas has good potential. He is young and learning. He should do well. Vinay Lagad, my nephew, is a Gold Medalist from the Irish National Institute. They have an elaborate theory and practical course. One gets deeper understanding of horses and astute training skills. Vinay may start off at Kolkata. I expect him to take charge of my stables when I call it a day.
IR: In conclusion, how do you foresee the forthcoming Mumbai Season?NL: It is certainly going to be an interesting one. The big boys have had ample time to tune and get their horses in shape. Make no mistake, the show in Mumbai is going to be top-notch! Personally, my established horses have done their bit in Pune, so I reckon I will be more than happy if they do well here so soon. I have a very potent juvenile force that I am optimistic and excited about. It is too early to single out anyone, but there certainly are a few who will make their presence felt!

d byramji and c alford suspension

Darius Byramji and C Alford whose license was withdrawn for one year by the Stewards of the Mysore Race Club, got reprieve from the Stewards of the Bangalore Turf Club on Sunday. Both the professionals had incurred the wrath of the Stewards following the defeat of favourite Echoes of Light in the hands of owner-mate Bold Reply. Races were held up following riot by irate punters. Darius Byramji’s suspension was reduced from one year to one month and he stands suspended till the end of December 31, 2007 while C Alford’s suspension stays suspended up to the end of May 31, 2008. Both the professionals can now appeal to the Appeal Board and can get further reduction. It is believed that some high level pressure ensured that the suspension of these professionals got diluted so much.

todays post about indian breeding mystical

DUBAI: Like most former British colonies, India was left with a passion for horse racing. But while countries from Canada to Australia to South Africa embraced the sport wholeheartedly, developing racing industries that produced world-beating horses, India struggled.
Prohibitive taxes to discourage gambling, miniscule purses and overall poverty left the racing and breeding of thoroughbreds confined to a small circle of wealthy devotees.
But on Saturday night, more than 200 years of patience, dreams and hard work will be put to the test as India finally introduces one of its thoroughbreds on the international stage.
A horse called Mystical will carry the hopes of Indian horse breeding at the Dubai World Cup meeting, the richest thoroughbred races in the world. Mystical, a five-year-old bay, will run in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free, a $5 million race over just under 1,800 meters, or a mile and an eighth, on the turf at Nad al Sheba racecourse.
"All of India will be watching," said Mystical's owner, Zavaray Poonawalla. "This is absolutely huge for us. Our racing industry could be changed completely. The world will recognize the Indian horse."
Today in Sports

}

Poonawalla realizes the odds are against him. The field of 16 includes a pair of Japanese champions and the American winner of the Santa Anita Handicap. While no betting is permitted in Dubai, British bookmakers quote Mystical at odds as long as 33 to 1.
But Poonawalla said Mystical was the best product of Indian thoroughbred breeding so far, and he was hoping for a big race from his horse - a gelding ("sadly," he added) bred at his stud farm in Pune, 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, from Mumbai.
Poonawalla, who owns one of the largest producers of vaccines in the world, the Serum Institute of India, keeps about 375 horses at his stud farm. He stands three stallions, including the sire of Mystical, Alnasr Alwasheek.
He estimates there are about 5,000 thoroughbreds in India - a small fraction of the world thoroughbred population, which grows by about 110,000 every year. There are only nine racetracks in India, with only a handful of racing dates.
But Poonawalla, 63, is determined to lift Indian racing into the world spotlight. He said he had been involved in the sport since he "was in short pants," growing up on the stud farm started in the 1940s by his father.
He has been lobbying the government for years to reduce gambling taxes and support the racing industry. "We have zero support," he said. "We survive on our passion."
He said that high taxes on gambling drove many betters to illegal bookmakers. He estimated that if the government would lower the taxes and establish a nationwide tote system, the Indian betting market could rival that of Hong Kong, one of the most lucrative in the world.
To bolster his case, he is crossing his fingers for Saturday night. Mystical came to Dubai in late December to run in the annual racing carnival that takes place from January through World Cup night. The horse ran two races during the carnival and won them both, already a first for an Indian-bred horse. But Mystical has suffered his share of troubles. His trainer, Subbaiah Ganapathy, had a heart attack after Mystical's first Dubai victory, in February, and his regular jockey, Ryan Moore, broke his shoulder in a fall in Britain two weeks ago. Martin Dwyer will ride him on Saturday night.
The Duty Free is one of four Group 1 races on Saturday, crowned by the $6 million Dubai World Cup, the richest race in the world. U.S.-based horses have taken home $42.2 million of the nearly $130 million that Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has put on the table since starting the meeting 12 years ago. The home team has hung on to $45 million, and the rest has been won by horses from 15 other countries. India is not among them - yet.

golimaster stats and style of writing

Todays card has gambles from small stables written all over it so watch the betting closely before makaing your choice.Race 1: MILES AND MORE should out stay this set and beat it with ease DANCE DIVA is the only danger.Tips: 3 MILES AND MORE 2 DANCE DIVARace 2: SEE THE TRUTH had a good forward run first up and has been tracking well is the first pick unless Antia goes with Open Season.SHARAPOVA has been stripped fit and is the horse that will run a good race today make note.Tips: SEE THE TRUTH ; SHARAPOVA;OPEN SEASONRace 3:RECOLLECTION will be hard to beat in this set,SURMOUNT who is having the first run today if on job can upset watch market.Tips: RECOLLECTION ; SURMOUNTRace 4 : Bad race he term will suit ROYAL HUNT who belongs to agambeling connection if money comes its way will be hard to beat DINGLE is second best but this race is best left aloneRace 5: 8. AVEC PLAISIR has the best chance to win from COSMOPOLITAN who was an impressive winner last time.STAR OF CHINA is running after 6 months for the first time on the pune track if he wins good luck.Tips: AVEC PLAISIR ;COSMOPOLITAN;STAR OF CHINARace 6: Many first timers here best to leave this race FRONTIER MAIL is one horse that should not be overlooked.Race 7: LUVATA deserves merit in this weak set ITEM BOMB is next best and should be considered as a smal eachway bet.Race 8: SUPREME ATTRACTION is my pick to win from ROMAN RULER and FIREY FUTURE .All the best
--------------------------------------------
Race 1: It looks like there is going to be a gamble on 3. LONE TROJAN today horse looks to have been prepared well and is ready to strike see the market and if money come his way he will put his running shoes on.7. MASTER PLANNER is also from a gambeling owner and looks better then the former but is an unsound horse and from past experiences when both these owners have had a gamble in the same race H Mehta has always had a upper hand. the only horse that can upset this gamble is 1. FIREY FUTURE who should win here on paper but I have my reservations.... be careful and watch the marketRcae 2: 6. SUPREME DISCOVERY IS A VERY NICE HORSE if tried will win well watch market.Race 3: Pace of the race which will be very slow will decide the winner as it will be sprint to the winning post in the last 600 mts hence i am opting for a younger horse in 4. DREAMING ...2. GOLDEN TRIANGLE is second best and will not make it easy for anyone.Race 4: 2. RUBEN STAR is the one to beat in this open race 1. OYSTER COVE is the dark horse and cant be ignored Very bad raceRace 5: Worst race of the day any onecan win hence i am looking for a small bet on horses that are good eachway value and 2. STAR O`WAR stands tall and is worth a eachway punt the other dark horses are 16. OYSTER GEM and 7. COSMIC FLOWER Race 6:2. MAVERICK whos odds has surprised me in saying that the owners of the favorite are genuine and will be trying the horse all out I think an upset is looming large in this race 5. LANDLORD who is ready to strike.Race 7: the faith of this race is between 2. DRUIDS GLEN who has not had a fair run so far and 9. MODESTY who is speedy and drawn well i strongly believe the former doesnot belong in this class and should account for it.Make a note of 10. CLASSIC STAR will be tried in place today. In all today card will be ruled by gambles by H metha , I nathani and a few others watch betting in the ring and make your decision. H dajis runners will do well and C RAJENDRA and P Belose are jockeys that can strike too.Eachway bets : Oyster Cove/L Trojan (only if backed)/Landlord/Star O WarWin bets : S Discovery (only if backed) and D GlenGood luckTiger
