kolkata,calcutta horse racing

Trainer Javed Khan seems to be is a firm believer of cashing in on his horses when they run into form. At least, Alarico’s facile victory, last Thursday in the 1,400m Harry The Horse Cup, fully justified such a belief. About a fortnight ago, the six-year-old had gone down fighting to Brilliant Victory, despite his weight disadvantage against the winner. On this day, Alarico was enjoying a substantial pull at the weights from his seven rivals , including the likes of Retained Asset, Fabulous Emperor and Way to the Stars who are no mean horses. However, everything worked to his advantage as fitness was the key factor in the field and the Steinbeck-As Ever son clearly advertised it when he beat the field hollow.

Jockey Mohammed Islam, too, rode a well-judged race. He let Alarico settle behind the last outing winner, Body And Soul, and the top-weighted Retained Asset, till they turned for home. Given the signal, the favourite marched ahead to score without much sweat over a heavily punished Retained Asset and a late finishing Paladin.

Daniel David’s Steal The Glory also proved a cut above the rest in the Alamito Handicap. Steal The Glory fully justified the favourite's tag, winning by six long lengths after taking the charge from the front-running Lady Superior, at the halfway mark.

Earlier on, David’s Majestic Poet had delivered the goods in the Contralto Handicap. The 7-4 favourite was a chance-ride for jockey M. Mark after G Ross had reported sick. Mark allowed his main rival, Live It Love, to make the running with a two-length lead, which hardly proved sufficient the moment Mark released the brakes on the favourite. In fact, it was Genesis who was an impressive third in spite of going all over the place in the straight.

David could have ended the day with a treble but the replacement of the indisposed Ross, by Surjeet Singh, on a heavily fancied Cool Magic, in the 1 400m Stoney Valley Handicap, cost the trainer dearly. The 7-4 joint-favourite, with Harvinder Singh Bath’s Prospective Queen, was shown daylight at the top of the turn when the two leaders, Betelgeuse and Rapid Return, ran short of the steam. At that stage of the race, Prospective Queen was trailing the field following a tardy start. Surjeet, however, squandered the advantage in the final furlong when the Bath-trainee got into the top gear. The jockey not only surrendered the lead in the final 50m, he also failed to keep the second slot following Rapid Return’s renewed bid.

Mystro helped trainer Vijay Singh opene his monsoon season’s account. S.Shanker, guiding the 16-10 favourite, was never seen to be perturbed with the runaway tactics of Aptitude and settled the Tirol son in the second bunch with True Beauty and Mythical Star till 300m from home. Opting for the rail-side passage, thereafter, Mystro simply cruised past the front-runners to record a four-length-plus verdict over Mythical Star and the late-finishing Roofer.

The 1,100m Thrifty Allan Handicap provided a sizzling finish with four horses – Acrostic, Wonnabee, Mozart and Falaknuma – in a close huddle at the winning post. They finished in the order named with a shade over a length separating the four. Mozart was at the helm of affair till about 200m from the winning post. However, the Mischevious Music son found it hard to stretch himself further when the other three, running in a close proximity, started covering ground in the last 150 metres. Acrostic was the first one to overtake the leader and the Bath-trainee, ridden by apprentice Afzal Khan, never surrendered the advantage to any of his rivals, though his victory-margin was a mere ‘nose.’ Wonnabee, the joint-favourite with the top-weighted Ecstatic Pride, was impressive in defeat. He was the fastest finishing horse in the end, galloping on the far side of the track.

Gorgonzola's victory, in the Bachelor’s Wedding Handicap left a bad taste in the mouth. The Poet’s Dream –Dance Attack daughter had trailed the field in her last outing only a fortnight ago. However, on this occasion, the filly took a commanding three-length lead from the start and lasted out to score. Trainer Shafiq Khan was lucky to escape with just a routine warning.

Jimmy has ridden more than 1,200 winners in the UK

He started his apprenticeship with Jim Bolger in Ireland before moving to England and joining Mike O'Neill, followed by Luca Cumani.

His first winner came at Thirsk on Hitchinstown in 1988 and his first major success soon followed when he won the Ayr Gold Cup in 1990 aboard the 50-1 shot Joveworth.

In 1990 he won the Apprentices' championship with 47 winners.

In 1998 he was offered the illustrious job of the retained jockey to the late Robert Sangster which was instantly successful when he won the Racing Post Trophy on Commander Collins in the same year.

Jimmy’s best horse in recent times is the Cheveley Park Stud owned, Nannina, who he won the Corontaion Cup on in 2006.

life of a race horse

The racing career of horses bred for Flat racing typically starts as a two year old. At this age, the Thoroughbred will be able to run over relatively short distances against horses of the same age. From this time onwards, the horse spends the majority of its racing life in the care of a trainer, who is responsible for ensuring the horse runs to the best of its ability.

Once horses have learned the basics of racing alongside other horses, and then learned to stride away from them, their racing career settles into pattern. Routine training is combined with a specific programme of exercise designed to bring the horse to his peak for a race. The trainer will control the amount and intensity of exercise each horse has in his care, and it is unlikely that the horse will gallop every day – otherwise even the best horses would burn out.

Like all modern-day athletes, racehorse trainers take advantage of the latest exercise and dietary regimes. For example, many trainers use equine swimming pools to work horses’ muscles and cardiovascular systems without putting excessive strain on their legs.

Although a horse’s training regime is organised around their racing programme, trainers will work their horses with a serious gallop two days per week. Based on their ability and fitness, flat horses can stay in training up to around 10 years old. However, it is common for top-class flat racehorses to stop racing soon after their peak years of three or four so they can maximise their potential at stud.

Horses destined to race over jumps have, of course, to learn how to handle hurdles and fences, as well as gallop. This process, known as schooling, can be difficult for some horses, and required great patience from trainers.

First off, horses are tried out over a series of small poles without a rider, until their confidence increases. Once they are ready, chasers and hurdlers are schooled at home over the appropriate obstacles.

Typically, jumps racehorses start their careers in extended Flat races – known as bumpers – to get them used to the longer distances involved. The following season, most jumps racehorses will compete in hurdles races. These are smaller obstacles than fences, and hurdles races tend to be run over shorter distances. Depending on the physical attributes and aptitude of the horse, the trainer may then switch him to steeplechase fences.

Like humans, all horses are different. Some racehorses will be able to race a great deal during a short period of time. Others might need lots of time between races to recover. Similarly, some horses are ready to win at the beginning of the season, whereas others may reach their peak fitness after two or three races.

Social Service in ttd tirumala

TTD has taken many social service initiatives in areas like education, medical treatment, and rehabilitation of the physically challenged and economically backward. It also provides aid to authors and subsidised equipment to other temples.

The objective of the Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD) is to provide medical treatment/facilities to those suffering from polio myelitis, cerebral palsy, congenital anomalies, spinal injuries, and the orthopaedically handicapped, particularly the poor, irrespective of religion, caste or creed.

In 1994, BIRRD was converted to a Trust. TTD provides a matching grant to the Trust, equivalent to the donations it receives. A proposal for 100% exemption under the Indian Income Tax Act, for donations to BIRRD is under consideration.

BIRRD operates from a spacious hospital with a capacity of 250 beds, built at a cost of Rs. 4.5 crore. It has five operation theatres, a modern Artificial Limb Fitting Centre (that provides aids and appliances, free of cost, to physically handicapped patients) and a sophisticated Physiotherapy Department. Research is also conducted here.

Currently, BIRRD is in the process of collecting data pertaining to polio-affected children in Andhra Pradesh, after which it will start screening patients at the district level. With the help of voluntary organisations, three districts have already been covered under this scheme.

BIRRD proposes to start a Total Spinal Trauma Care Centre with comprehensive rehabilitation. It also plans to introduce post graduate and graduate courses in Physiotherapy.

Sri Venkateswara Poor Home is a hospital that caters to the needs of leprosy patients. It is one of the largest of its kind in India, and admits persons suffering from various forms of leprosy, from all over India.

The hospital is well-equipped, with twenty inpatient wards. The outpatient block has an operation theatre and physiotherapy section.

Patients are treated with intensive multi-drug therapy and given physiotherapy. They are also educated about the prevention and care of leprosy. The average duration of treatment varies from six to eighteen months.

During treatment, patients also undergo occupational therapy where they are trained in skills like carpentry, shoe-making and weaving. The training helps in the patients' rehabilitation in society.
The inpatients are given training in agriculture. They are trained to grow different crops. The produce is used by the hospital; the excess produce is sent to the other institutions of TTD.

TTD set up the Leprosy Rehabilitation Promotional Unit (LRPU) in 1988 in the Sri Venkateswara Poor Home campus at Tirupati under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme of the Government of India. The Government of India provides full financial assistance - Rs 4 lakh annually.

The objective of LRPU is to provide reconstructive surgery and artificial prosthetic support to leprosy patients and help them in rehabilitation.

Patients are provided several facilities including free food and accommodation.

The Poor Home has set its sights on the total eradication of leprosy in India. It aims to increase awareness among the public about leprosy through health education. It keeps abreast with the latest technical know-how by deputing its staff to various medical institutions, and conducting seminars periodically to focus on the latest trends in treatment and rehabilitation measures.

TTD has been inspired by Mother Teresa who once remarked, "When I am washing the wounds of a leper, I feel I am doing great service to the Lord ".

bangalore horse races

Vijay Singh trained Regal Connection recorded a comprehensive victory in the 1400 metres Leading Stud Cup and in the process, considerably dented the high profile Our Excellencee and Dancing Highness on the concluding days Bangalore Summer Races on Wednesday. Our Excellencee, who gained a big reputation after a runaway debut win at Mumbai earlier this year, hasnt lived up to expectations. He finished third in the Gr.1 Poonawalla Million and since then his form has taken a reverse turn and he has lost both his outings.

Dancing Highness had beaten Regal Connection in the last time they met but today she faltered on the soft going and though the filly is a good type she was unable to overcome the traditional weakness of the progeny of Glory of Dancer to act on such surfaces.

Our Excellencees reputation was made by just one run at Mumbai and two runs in Bangalore have unmade it. Prakash gave an uncharacteristic ride, bolting to the front, establishing a big break over his rivals which had the fancied runner left with weak legs when the race was on the boil. Suraj Narredu raced Regal Connection in the fourth or fifth position, unperturbed by the hectic pace at the front. He gradually worked his way up and had the measure of Dancing Highness en route to challenging the front-runner. Regal Connection, who picked up speed in the final furlong, easily sailed past Our Excellencee to record a facile win. Dancing Highness who did not show the patented speed, struggled to finish more than seven lengths behind the second placed Our Excellencee.

The Capricorn Stud Farm had something to cheer when its resident stallion Juniper, finally had a winner through Mangalya Prarambh who took a long while to come into the winning bracket. The first crop of Juniper hasnt proved to be effective and Mangalya Prarambh was his first winner in India. Game of Life was the betting rage in the Leading Bookmaker Cup (Div I), with strong support also coming in the way of the eventual winner who was steadily showing signs of coming into winning bracket. Game of Life was pushed to the front by jockey T S Jodha and the progeny of Hymn led the way, with Mangalya Prarambh chasing in close attendance. Rounding the final bend, Game of Life failed to quicken the way his track work had suggested and Mangalya Prarambh had no difficulty in sailing away for a comfortable win. Game of Life shifted out under pressure but just about managed to save the second spot ahead of Brave Arjun and Candance. The last named can get a chance to score at Mysore.

Fired Up was left with no worthwhile opposition in the lower division of the same race. New Zealand jockey Vincent Colgan took Fired Up to the front and the progeny of Placerville kept on increasing the lead to record a facile win. Colgan thus had a double for the day as he won the upper division of the race too with Mangalya Prarambh. Good Company was second way ahead of Couelle.

Poonawalla Stud Farm emerges on top

T
he Poonawalla Stud Farm emerged on top at the conclusion of the Bangalore Summer Races on Wednesday. The stud farm which bred 27 winners, finished ahead of Kunigal Stud Farm which had 23 winners to its credit. The Poonawalla Stud Farm bred Bourbon King (Diffident-Queen Ann), who won both the Colts Trial Stakes and the Kingfisher Derby, earned stakes close to Rs 1 crore mainly due to the enormous hike in stakes for the Bangalore Derby and emerged as the Champion Horse of the Season. Arjun Mangalorkar’s Fairytaleending (Inner City-Classic Story) was the Horse of the Season for her consistent performance, having won thrice and placed in two other outings.

As expected, Ganapathy and Prakash shared the top honours among trainers and jockeys respectively. Dr M A M Ramaswamy was the leading individual owner.

Be that as it may, the long drawn card on the final day definitely did not go well with race goers who would have preferred to have the usual eight or nine races. Easy and Hawaiian Sunrise who has lost form were the market fancies to win the 1200 metres Leading Owner Cup (Div I) while Mystic Force which should have received strong support was available at lucrative odds. In the event, Mystic Force and Axara set a furious pace, with Easy giving up a futile attempt to go to the front at around the final bend. Mystic Force who shook off Axara while entering the straight, kicked away for a facile win with Rebellious and Snob Value taking the next two spots. Easy who ran out of steam at the final bend, was a spent force when the race was on the boil.

Rio Bravo who had created a favorable impression when recording a facile win when winning last time out despite running after a long lay off, was backed spiritedly and shared favoritism with Ruby Rocket. Despite a sluggish getaway from the gates, Rio Brave moved swiftly along the rails, saved ground and when pulled out from the rails in the final 350 metres, the progeny of Tirol showed tremendous acceleration to win pulling up the lower of the race. Ruby Rocket was not in the hunt. Havana and Arctic Blast finished second and third respectively. The Sriram Komandur trainee has the ability to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Aeropostale, who had been knocking on the doors of success, claimed the division three of the Leading Owner Cup getting the better of Zafar for whom the change of name too did not help matters. Kioko came up with a flourish in the final furlong but could only finish third.

After a frustrating wait, trainer Sardar Singh finally had success through Ciampino in the Champion Jockey Cup (Div I). Advocate General and Footstepsinthesky were engaged in an absorbing battle and when the former emerged the better, he was being hailed as a winner. However, Ciampino who was stuck along the rails was pulled out and given a clear run and the favourite responded gamely to win with a degree of comfort. Footstepsinthesky fought back to push Advocate General to the third spot. Free Glider who was backed spiritedly in the lower division of the race, just about held on to win from a late-finishing Rocamora. Hakuna Matata came good, winning the Champion Jockey Cup (Div III)with a fair degree of comfort. Alonso, who graced the wrong end of the field, came through the rails to come within striking distance of the winner.

The Leading Tipster Cup was claimed by lesser fancied Illusive Girl who managed to keep her only challenger Fantabulous Hero at a safe distance. There was inspired support for Hurry Home but the horse itself was in no hurry in the race.

saratoga races

Kentucky Derby hero Street Sense returned to the races and made a promising start to his summer campaign with a victory in the Grade II Jim Dandy at Saratoga Racecourse on Sunday. The race carried a $500,000 purse. The margin of winning was 1 1/2 lengths. The time for the nine-furlong journey was 1 48.99. Calvin Borel was aboard. Taking second was C P West who stalked the pace-setter, took charge in the lane and fought on gamely only to be overhauled by Street Sense late in the stretch. Street Sense was 35 cents on the dollar and returned $2.70. Street Sense's next race is in the Travers Stakes on August 25 at Saratoga. Carl Nafzger, Street Sense's trainer, said, "he got a lot out of this race. That was just what we needed for the Travers."At Del Mar in California on Sunday, In Summation won the $300,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Handicap. In Summation, Corey Nakatani up, beat Greg's Gold, the 2005 Crosby hero,in a photo. The time for six furlongs was 1 11.06. In Summation paid $18.40.Saratoga had a lot of stakes action on Saturday. In the $750,000 Grace I Whitney Handicap, Lawyer Ron was a 4 3/4 length winner in 1 46.64 over nine furlongs. He beat the track record of 1 47.04. John Velasques was the winning jockey. Lawyer Ron returned $13.00. Wanderin Boy set the pace and held for second. Lawyer Ron gained a berth in the 5-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park in late October. Ginger Punch ran away with the Go For Wand Handicap. The $250,000 Grade I event was over nine furlongs and Ginger Punch's time was 1 49. The payoff was $4.50. Rafel Bejarano rode Ginger Punch who earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup distaff. The $500,000 Grade I Diana Stakes went to My Typhoon, ridden by Eddie Castro. The time was 1 46.47 for the mile event. My Typhoon paid $8.10. My Typhoon earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly-Mare turf. Finishing third was the strongly-fancied Makderah who found her best stride when it was all over. At Arlington Park on Saturday, Lewis Michael carried the public purse to a decisive win in the Grade II Washington Park Handicap. E T Baird was the winning rider. The time was 1 55.17 for 1 3/16 miles. On Saturday at Ascot in England, Dylan Thomas returned to winning ways in the 12-furlong King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Dylan Thomas, Johnny Murtagh up, was wide all the way and lay about fifth. Two furlongs to go and Dylan Thomas bounded forward when given the green light. The margin was four lengths and the time was 2 31.11. The race was worth 425,850 pounds to the winner. Youmzain paced on to take the runner-up berth. Scorpion set the pace and tired. Maraahel lay handy, hit the front turning for home and was outpaced as the race took a serious turn. Dylan Thomas was 5-4 and the track was good to soft. The dry conditions played to the winner's strength. In America, jockey Jose Santos,46, announced his retirement on Monday. Santos rode 4083 winners from 25,290 rides. His winners earned 187 million dollars. He began riding in America in 1984. He won the Derby and the Preakness with Funny Cide in 2003. He was in a spill on Feb 1 at Aqueduct. He suffered five fractures in his spine. "My back is in bad shape. My doctor said it would not be a good idea to come back because one more spill and I may not walk. Retiring is in my best interests and the interests of my kids and grandchildren," Santos said.

bangalore races

It can only happen with the gold and brown colours. A horse can show great form and then run poorly and vice versa, a trend that happens with amazing regularity. Badge of Gold, who began the season as one of the top three-year olds at this centre, confirmed that impression with an emphatic win in the highest class only to falter thereafter in his next two races in term races. But brought back to a handicap race, Badge of Gold regained his winning form, edging out Rhapsidion Snow with ease in the 1400 metres Patrons Trophy which highlighted the penultimate day’s racing of Bangalore Summer Season on Thursday.
Despite his two poor runs, Badge of Gold was backed down spiritedly, with Rhapsidion Snow next in demand. Rhapsidion Snow hit the front as the starter dispatched the field for the seven furlong trip, with Badge of Gold racing alongside. Rounding the final bend, Rhapsidion Snow did not appear to leave his opponent behind as Badge of Gold was only biding his time. The two were involved in a brief tussle and Rhapsidion Snow who held the initiative till the final furlong, drifted out and would have taken Badge of Gold along with her but jockey Mark Zahra did well to control the drift. Badge of Gold got stronger on the wide outside, went clear and won with something to spare. Hugo, who had won his last outing with a start to finish dash, struggled for pace in the early part and finished on to take the third spot.Sweeping Success was another horse from trainer Ganapathy’s yard to be seen in different mood. Sweeping Success who had gone down to Logans Run rather tamely in her last run, won the A.Raoof Sait Memorial Plate (Div I) which had some of the most promising three-year olds in the fray. More than five horses were running with a fair chance of landing the spoils. In The Zone who had got the better of Logans Run ended up as the firm favourite. River Island, Raider’s Sun, Sweeping Success and the rest were at lucrative odds. At the start, Fighting Star went on to Raider’s Sun, causing him to check the horse and lose ground as a result. Fighting Star set the pace with Angelique, Sweeping Success, In the Zone and Olivia Valiere racing in close attendance while Raider’s Sun had to be settled in almost the rear of the field.Rounding the final bend, Fighting Star shifted out to give In The Zone a clear run along the rails while Sweeping Success was held up along the rails but jockey Prakash was able pull his horse out in the nick of time and get her going. In the meanwhile, Raider’s Son who was left to cover plenty of ground on the front-runners, came up with a big run and challenged Sweeping Success very strongly but the winning post came too quickly for comfort and the filly held on to win by a neck. In the Zone ran to be third. Sweeping Success had run a good fourth in the Fillies Trial Stakes but in her earlier run, last as a firm favourite. In contrast, the lower division of the race was contested by poor lot of horses. Colonel Duff who went into the lead on turning for home, just about lasted out to win from South Star who came in for sustained support in the ring. When this race was held, the going had become soft due to heavy showers that preceded the two races before. My Friend Paul and Mother’s Pride, who were also fancied to run well, ran below expectations.Despite failing thrice as a favorite, Associator still opened as the first choice for the Mystic Memory Trophy but soon the odds drifted out so alarmingly that from an initial quote of 6/4, he ended up at tens and over. Marianella became the favourite by default while Enforcer was next in demand. In the race itself, Associator was not in serious business while Born beauty who went ahead of the front-running Marianella to the top of the straight, held on to win from Enforcer who finished second best for the sixth time! Jockey Imran Chisty on Associator did not get a good position, dropping back and then in the straight, continuously kept his horse behind horses, not giving room to gallop. He pulled the horse out only in the closing stages of the race and the horse finished on strongly suggesting what he was capable of if he was allowed his head. The Stewards have opened an enquiry into the running of the race but it remains to be seen if anything comes about if only because the jockeys who belong to the stable are a privileged lot. Born Beauty who had finished down the field in her last run, won the race, reversing the form and for this, trainer Loknath was fined Rs 10,000 for improved performance of the horse as compared the run of the filly only four days ago.
